WHy it's good to release butterflies (NORBET KONDLA)

Norbert Kondla

Practicing Conservation Biologist
Co-Author of "Alberta Butterflies"
University of Calgary
Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
Association of Professional Biologists of British Columbia

(This written opinion is not the official position nor opinion of the government of British Columbia.)

Norbert Kondla commented that:

... "It may be that releasing extra butterflies does not help the web of life but at this point in my life I see no reason to believe that this would be unhelpful or harmful (the fact that some people hold such an opinion does not make it so)."

He further continues this thread:

"I am writing to express my disappointment with the poorly informed criticisms that are being raised by some people on the topic of butterfly releases. This highly speculative criticism is best exemplified by the opinion piece entitled "There's no need to release butterflies-they're already free"; which I found on the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) web site.

I am a conservation biologist who has also been actively studying butterflies in western North America for 30 years. I also have more than 25 years experience with environmental and resource management, primarily from a government regulatory perspective. I am aware that there are significant biodiversity conservation issues that demand our attention. Release of butterflies provided by members of the International Butterfly Breeders Association is NOT a significant issue or concern to me. I am also aware that there are extremist views and values that inevitably surface whenever people chose to make a living through responsible use of natural resources.

Such views are often sincere expressions of concern but this does not mean that they have any basis in relevant facts or science.

Some people will chose to criticize on the basis of emotional values and beliefs wich are not shared by those who chose to make decisions through rational thought. The authors of the NABA opinion piece have the right to express their opinions. So do I. My professional and personal opinion is that the said opinion piece is fanciful speculation with inappropriate analogies.

I see no reason to act on such alarmist imaginings. Considered and regulated use of natural resources should be encouraged and supported. It is in the public interest to do so. It is not in the public interest to ban a particular commercial activity on the basis of fanciful imaginings."
